A lesson in persistence
He is 76 years old.
Here, he is heading back out onto the farm after dinner to shift stock. At an age when most people are ‘retired’ he single-handedly looks after the day to day running of 470 acres of land and the 700 cattle that graze it.
Rain, hail or stifling, sizzling drought he works in the elements every day. He has been a farmer all his life and pretty much everything he does is motivated by the hope of providing for his family.
This drought is stretching him to his 76-year old limit. He is tired, worried, and at times, a bit overwhelmed. But every day, he carries on doggedly and can't imagine what else he would do with his days. This portrait of him is in my top 16 for the exhibition.
Tomorrow he goes into hospital to begin treatment for prostate cancer.
He's my dad.
