This afternoon we celebrated Iris' fifth birthday, and this beautiful, spunky, free-spirited little girl takes out the photo of the day, on her big day. It was a scorching summer's afternoon and the kids had a great time. I didn't know many of them, but very nearly lost my heart to one ;) Here are my favourite shots, including the youngest-to-oldest pinata smash.
Today would have been my grandmother's birthday. Born in 1902, she lived until she was 101, and it is her and my grandfather's farm I now live on. She was a survivor of the 1931 Napier earthquake and earned the distinction of seeing Halley's comet twice in her lifetime: it comes around every 75 years or so. She was little, but indomitable. The parallels between her and Iris weren't lost on me today.
